Mexico falls to Spain in historic women’s beach soccer debut

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Mexico made its international debut in beach soccer on Saturday, falling 3-1 to visiting Spain to open their two-match series in the women’s competition of the 2017 Visit Puerto Vallarta Cup.

Spain 3, Mexico 1

Andrea Miron Castro broke a 1-1 stalemate late in the third period and Spain went on to earn a 3-1 win over Mexico.   After Alba Mellado Martinez gave the European side a 1-0 lead in the first period, Daniela Calderon struck for Mexico’s first-ever goal three minutes into the third period.  Spain’s Carla Morera netted an insurance tally with one second remaining on the clock.  The teams will matchup again Sunday at the same.  Retired Mexico international Maribel Dominguez made her head coaching debut for the host.
